Don Browning

“Earth, receive an honored guest.”

Don Browning died today.  He is one of the most admirable men I have ever met.  A true teacher, a scholar of astonishing range and erudition, a man of courage and unflagging decency, a Christian who walked humbly, loved mercy, and acted justly, a wonderful friend and mentor to so many.  He seems more or less single-handedly — OK, with some good help from John Witte and the Lilly Endowment and a few others — to have rescuscitated marriage and the family as serious issues within mainstream Protestant scholarship and thought … although his passing makes me fear that what he stood for is a lot weaker out there in the world, now that he is gone.

He faced death with bravery and astonishing grace, an example to us all.  (He had thatched his roof in fair weather.)  God bless him and Carol and his family.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
