" ...but as he proved on his trip with his hired assistant, he still would treat gay people with respect and kindness."

May I say this is the funniest thing I have read all week.

[...] I’m pretty embarrased to use up any more of the universe’s time and energy on the subject of me and George Rekers, but (sigh) here goes. For those you just tuning in, you can catch up on the exciting episodes you may have missed by reading this. [...]

Mr. Howard: You make a good point. It's just that I really don't agree with Mr. Rekers, and I was trying to make that crystal clear. I also tried to qualify the label "anti-gay" -- I don't think I've ever called him a "bigot" -- with phrases such as "by most accouts" and "seems." But still, you make a real point, and I will do some thinking about that, I promise.

It is terrible what Frank Rich and Wayne Besen did to smear you along with Mr. Rekers, and understandable to want to distance yourself from him, but isn't that itself rather polarizing? If you want to be a bridge builder, don't throw the poor man under the bus and label him a bigot, he's got friends too. So, he's against gay adoption - that's not radical or necessarily bigoted, it might be best for children to have married heterosexual role models of each sex, everything else being equal. And I bet he'd say he believed in equal dignity of every person. Heck even Fred Phelps says we are all equally depraved and damned. Reker's would probably say that homosexual love was disordered and unhealthy, like the Pope does, but as he proved on his trip with his hired assistant, he still would treat gay people with respect and kindness.
Then again, I didn't read his report, so I don't know what it was he said that is so objectionable. I just have sympathy for him just as I have for you, and feel it is polarizing to label people bigots and distance yourself from them.
